From the very beginning with Stephenson's Rocket until the last steam hauled train services ran in 1968, we have given steam locomotives names. Fortunately many of these magnificent pieces of engineering have been preserved and this quiz contains cryptic clues to the names of 80 of them. Even if you don't think you know much about the subject you will still be able to enjoy solving the clues as, if you read the quiz carefully, you will find the list we used to set the questions.

Copies of the quiz can be downloaded here and you can send your fee with your completed entry, or if you still want the thrill of receiving a paper copy in the post they can still be requested by sending a stamped, addressed envelope and entry fee to :-

We would rather like it if you do not ask for answers on internet forums but if you really, really must, can you please wait until 7th April 2012 and then if you need help please ask for clues only. If answers are given away it can spoil the quiz.
