International disability swimming gala
On Saturday 9 October 2004, the Lions Club of Billericay hosted the 7th International disability swimming gala. The twinned Lions Clubs of Billericay, Voreifel (near Cologne, Germany) and Bruxelles Royale, Belgium started the bi-annual event in 1992. In 2004 eight teams of ten swimmers with various forms of disabilities took part. The teams were sponsored by the original partner Lions clubs and also the Lions Clubs of Barking, Brentwood, Basildon, Romford and South Woodham Ferrers. A trophy of a silver cup, for the Lions Club sponsoring the winning team, was won by the Lions Club of Bruxelles Royale from Belgium. The gala culminated with evening presentation of medals to all competitors, followed by a buffet and disco to round off a thoroughly busy but very enjoyable day. Billericay Lions entertained the teams from Germany and Belgium on Sunday 10 October with a sightseeing tour of London which included a cruise on the Thames and a flight on the London Eye.
