Who Are Lions?
|
Billericay Lions is probably best known
for our annual Christmas Sleigh, our Saturday Morning Bookstall and now for
the annual Billericay Beer Festival.
But there is much more to us than that. We
are part of Lions Clubs International, comprising 1.4 million men and women
in 206 countries worldwide who get together to help those less fortunate
than themselves and have fun at the same time. |
What do we do?
|
Like many service clubs, we have a number
of varied fundraising activities. Billericay Lions has raised over £300,000
in the last 30 years for worthy causes. In addition to the Christmas Sleigh
and Annual Beer Festival, we hold indoor and outdoor Musical events, Quiz
Nights, "Taste of..." evenings, Easter Hamper Raffles, postal quizzes and
anything else considered appropriate.
In addition to
fundraising, we also have a “hands on" approach. This may mean pushing a
wheelchair along the seafront, digging a garden, helping to decorate an
elderly person's bathroom etc. Every 2 years there is an international
swimming gala for people with disabilities. We also provide a Senior
Citizens' Concert each year and transport arthritis sufferers to a local
club. |
The Caring Side
|
Funds raised have been distributed to many
charities and individuals. For a long list, please see our
donations page. Locally, St Luke's
Hospice, Little Havens, Hamelin House, Scouts, Guides, Schools, elderly and
disabled groups have benefited.
We also support national charities,
including Marie Curie, Macmillan Cancer Care, the Royal British Legion, St
Dunstan's, British Heart Foundation and the Special Olympics.
Some of the funds are donated to help
Lions International projects such as providing cataract operations to cure
preventable blindness, clean water wells in Africa and to emergency disaster
relief recently in Japan, New Zealand, Australia and Haiti.
We also support youth projects, such as
Young Leaders in Service, the Peace Poster competition and the Young
Ambassador of the Year competition. |
The Social Side
|
In addition to our Fundraising and
Community Service, we organise regular social events such as guided walks,
beer festival visits, trips to Twickenham, Wembley, theatre trips, quiz and
games nights, boat trips and visits to other Lions Clubs locally and
internationally. |
What We Offer
|
We offer our members
the satisfaction of helping others and the chance to make new friends and
have a lot of fun. |
Priorities
|
We recognise that our Members' families and
work come before the needs of the Lions Club. |
